It was a sound that clawed at the very roots of the ancient trees, a dissonant chord that made the flesh prickle and the spirit ache. The bell, Ahmeno’s bell, the heartwood of their village, was no longer singing its steady, life-affirming song. It was screaming.
Hyra, her brow furrowed, adjusted the delicate sensors on her wrist. The readings were erratic, chaotic. The energy signature they had so eagerly pursued was not a steady beacon, but a wild, untamed storm. It pulsed with a ferocity that felt less like power and more like desperation. Around them, the once verdant grove was succumbing to a creeping blight. Leaves, moments before a vibrant tapestry of greens and golds, curled and blackened, crumbling to dust at the slightest touch. The stream that meandered through the sacred space, usually a ribbon of crystal clarity, now flowed sluggishly, its waters tinged with an unnatural murkiness.
Kaul, his face a mask of impatient frustration, paced the perimeter of the grove, his polished boots crunching on the parched earth. “This is unacceptable,” he declared, his voice sharp enough to cut through the oppressive atmosphere. “The readings are off the charts, yet the output is… this. A dying patch of land. It’s inefficient.”
