The air in the sacred grove hummed, a low, resonant thrum that Ahmeno felt not just in his ears, but deep within his bones. It was a familiar song, the bell's ancient melody, but lately, it carried an undercurrent of discord, a faint tremor that mirrored the unease settling over the land. The delegation from the city, a stark contrast of gleaming metal and sharp angles against the soft, yielding earth, had set up their instruments near the grove’s edge. He saw the grove as a resource, the bell as a prize, a source of power to be harnessed and controlled. His technician, Hyra, a woman with a quiet intensity, worked diligently with her instruments, her brow furrowed in concentration. She was different from Kaul, Ahmeno sensed. There was a flicker of curiosity in her gaze, a hint of something beyond the cold logic of her machines.
