A delegation arrives from a gleaming, distant city. Their eyes, sharp and calculating, seek the bell's energy. They see power, not purpose, and Ahmeno, the quiet guardian, is in their way.

The air, usually so still and alive with the gentle hum of insects and the rustle of leaves, felt taut, stretched thin like an ancient hide. A strange scent, metallic and sharp, pricked at Ahmeno’s nostrils, an alien intrusion into the familiar perfume of damp earth and pine. He stood at the edge of the sacred grove, his gaze fixed on the path that led from the village, a path rarely trod by anyone beyond the elders or the children chasing stray chickens. Today, however, it was a ribbon of disturbance, a line of intrusion.

From the distance, a sound unlike any he had ever heard approached. It was a low thrumming, a mechanical pulse that vibrated not just in the air but in the very marrow of his bones. It was the sound of something unyielding, something that did not bend to the wind or sway with the seasons. It was the sound of the city, the place spoken of in hushed tones, a place of metal and smoke and relentless motion, a place that had always felt impossibly far from the quiet rhythm of Ahmeno’s life.

Mallara stood beside him, her weathered hands clasped tightly before her, her usual serene countenance etched with a flicker of apprehension. Her eyes, usually reflecting the deep calm of the forest canopy, were wide, fixed on the approaching figures. “They come, Ahmeno,” she said, her voice a soft murmur against the rising drone. “The ones from the city.”
