Chapter 12
Lessons in Resonance
The village elder, Mallara, reflects on the near-disaster. Her fear of the unknown is replaced by a profound respect for Ahmeno's wisdom and the ancient power he safeguards.
Mallara sat on the worn stone bench, the same one where she’d sat countless times, watching the children play, the elders converse, the rhythm of life unfold. But today, the familiar comfort felt different. The air, once thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, now carried a faint, metallic tang, a ghost of the unwelcome intrusion. Her fingers traced the cool, rough surface of the stone, a grounding sensation against the tremor that still ran through her. It had been days since the delegation had departed, days since the terrifying cacophony of their machines had been silenced, days since Ahmeno’s bell had sung its plea and then its solace.
She remembered the fear, sharp and cold, that had coiled in her stomach when the first whispers of an approaching threat had reached their village. Dismissed at first, as such things often were in their secluded valley, the whispers had grown into a palpable unease, a darkening of the sky that had nothing to do with clouds. And then, the city folk had arrived, their voices sharp and their eyes like polished obsidian, seeing only a prize, a source of power, blind to the life it sustained.
Mallara had always trusted Ahmeno. His quiet devotion to the bell, his almost symbiotic relationship with the land, had been a constant in her life. She had seen him as the guardian of their traditions, the keeper of their peace. But she had never truly understood the depth of his connection, the ancient currents that flowed through him and the bell, until the days of discord. The memory of the bell’s frantic, anguished ringing, a desperate cry against the invading technology, still echoed in the quiet spaces of her mind. And then, Ahmeno, standing before the city leader, a man whose arrogance radiated like heat from a forge, had refused to budge. He had stood firm, a solitary oak against a storm, his quiet strength a stark contrast to the delegation’s bluster.
