The hum of the life support system had become a lullaby, a constant, gentle thrum against the immense silence of the void. It was a sound I had once found alien, a mechanical heartbeat in a place devoid of organic life. Now, it was the rhythm of my existence, a steady pulse that beat in time with the distant, indifferent stars. I traced a condensation trail on the viewport, a ephemeral finger painting on the canvas of infinity. Always moving, always seeking.” I’d squint, trying to connect the pinpricks of light, my small hand tucked securely in his, feeling the calloused strength of his palm. Mom would watch from the porch, a silhouette against the warm glow of the kitchen light, a soft smile on her lips. Sometimes, I’d catch her gaze, a fleeting flicker of something unreadable in her eyes, a shadow that the stars couldn’t quite illuminate.
