The silence wasn't empty, not in the way I’d once imagined. It was a vast, velvet cloak, studded with diamond dust, and it hummed with a low, resonant frequency that vibrated deep within my bones. Out here, adrift in the inky blackness between worlds, the noise of Earth – the clamor of everyday life, the anxieties that had once gnawed at my edges – had softened, then faded, like a radio station losing its signal. It was a silence that allowed other sounds, softer ones, to rise.

I remembered a time when silence was a heavy blanket, woven from unspoken worries and the rustle of my mother’s apron. It was the silence of late nights, when Dada’s tools lay idle in the shed, and the only sound was the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall, each tick a hammer blow against the fragile façade of our peace. I remembered the silence that fell when Bill, small and earnest, would look up at me with those wide, questioning eyes, a question I couldn’t answer hanging unspoken between us. What was I looking for? Why did the stars call to me so fiercely?

Now, the stars were no longer distant pinpricks of light, but neighbors. I could almost feel the heat of their fusion, the ancient dance of their creation and destruction. They were no longer symbols of a yearning for something more, but tangible entities, each with its own story etched in nebulae and cosmic dust. And in their steady, unwavering glow, I began to see a new kind of map, one drawn not with roads and borders, but with light and gravity.
