The air in the small room vibrated with a silence that was more potent than any sound. It was the stillness of a held breath, a moment stretched taut before the inevitable release. I stood by the window, the cool glass a familiar kiss against my forehead, and traced the familiar patterns of the constellations that hung like scattered diamonds on the velvet cloak of night. Home. The word felt like a worn stone in my pocket, smooth and comforting, yet also a weight, anchoring me to a place I was beginning to outgrow.

Mom was humming softly in the kitchen, a melody as old as the worn linoleum beneath her feet, a song of quiet resilience and endless love. Dada’s gentle snores rumbled from the next room, a steady rhythm that had always been the lullaby of my childhood. Bill, tucked away in his own small bed, was likely dreaming of starships and alien worlds, his innocent imagination a mirror to the secret yearnings that fluttered in my own chest like trapped birds.

But tonight, the familiar comfort felt different. It was tinged with a melancholy that seeped into the very marrow of my bones, a premonition of departure. The papers on the table, crisp and official, spoke of journeys and distances, of theories and explorations. They were the keys to a door I had long been peering through, a door that promised not just knowledge, but a belonging that felt more profound, more aligned with the uncharted territories within me.
