The air in the abandoned opera house hung thick with the scent of dust and decay, a fitting stage for the performance about to unfold. Sylvia, draped in a midnight-blue gown that seemed to absorb the meager light, moved with the predatory grace of a panther. Her eyes, sharp and assessing, scanned the opulent, decaying boxes that lined the auditorium. Councilman Valerius Thorne was a ghost here, a phantom of power who had long since shed his corporeal form, leaving behind only the stench of corruption. But Thorne wasn’t her sole concern tonight.
A low, resonant hum vibrated through the cracked marble floor, a subtle signal. Vincent Mercer. He emerged from the shadows of the grand staircase, a silhouette against the tattered velvet curtains, his presence a palpable challenge. He was clad in a tailored charcoal suit, impeccably sharp, a stark contrast to the ruin surrounding them. His smile, when it came, was a cool, knowing thing, devoid of warmth.
“Duchess,” Mercer’s voice was a silken caress, laced with an edge of amusement. “Always so dramatic. An abandoned theatre? Really, darling, you could have chosen somewhere with better acoustics for our little tête-à-tête.”
