Her gaze, usually sharp and assessing, softened with a flicker of concern as she glanced towards the small, framed photograph on her desk: Elara Vance, her eyes wide and vulnerable, a stark contrast to the carefully cultivated image of strength Sylvia projected. Elara was the linchpin in this particular charade, the innocent face of Thorne’s predatory greed. And if Thorne was lashing out, Elara would be the first target.

“Come in,” Sylvia called, her voice a low, melodic purr, betraying none of the unease coiling in her gut.
