The air in Elara Vance’s cramped apartment was thick with the scent of stale tea and unspoken anxieties. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that dared to pierce the grimy windowpane, illuminating the worn floral wallpaper and the thin, threadbare rug. Sylvia, draped in a charcoal silk gown that seemed to absorb the meager light, moved with a predator’s grace, her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, scanning every detail. Elara, a wisp of a woman with tired eyes and hands that trembled as she poured a cup of overly steeped Earl Grey, watched Sylvia with a mixture of fear and a desperate, flickering hope.
“You said you could help,” Elara’s voice was a fragile thread, barely audible over the ticking of a cheap clock on the mantelpiece. “They said… they said you were the one to go to when the law failed.”
Sylvia accepted the offered cup, her fingers brushing Elara’s. A jolt, faint but unmistakable, passed between them. It wasn't the casual touch of strangers, but something deeper, something that resonated with a forgotten chord. Sylvia’s gaze sharpened, her usual cool detachment momentarily fractured. She cradled the warm ceramic, her thumb tracing the rim. “The law, Elara, often fails those who can’t afford its silence. Councilman Thorne has been… indiscreet with his avarice.”
