The air in the clandestine meeting room was thick with the scent of stale cigar smoke and desperation. Sylvia, cloaked in the anonymity of a shadowed corner, watched the scene unfold with a detached curiosity that belied the coiled tension within her. Councilman Valerius Thorne, a man whose smile was as manufactured as the silk of his impeccably tailored suit, held court, his pronouncements echoing with the hollow ring of practiced authority. He was a peacock preening for an audience of pigeons, unaware that one of them was a hawk in disguise.
His current target was the district’s affordable housing initiative, a project meant to lift the struggling families of the Lower Ward from their precarious existence. Thorne, however, saw only opportunity, a chance to line his pockets with the sweat and tears of the disenfranchised. He spoke of progress, of development, his words a silken noose tightening around the necks of those who had placed their faith in the illusion of his integrity. Sylvia’s jaw tightened. This was precisely the kind of rot she was bred to excise.
Her initial plan had been simple, elegant in its execution. A whisper campaign, carefully planted truths that would blossom into public scandal. A few strategically leaked documents, a carefully orchestrated ‘chance’ encounter with a journalist known for her sharp teeth and sharper pen. Thorne, she’d calculated, would be too arrogant to see the trap until it snapped shut.
