A Familiar Shadow
Elias's search leads him to a place connected to Stella. The environment is charged with tension, hinting at secrets and the ever-present threat of discovery.
The salt spray kissed Elias’s face, a familiar, briny caress that did little to soothe the unease coiling in his gut. He pulled the brim of his cap lower, the worn fabric a meager shield against the relentless sun and the equally relentless gaze he felt, even when no one was looking. He’d driven for two days, the hum of the engine a constant companion, the landscape blurring into a monotonous canvas of asphalt and scrub. But now, the air tasted different. It tasted of the sea, of damp earth, and of something else, something that snagged at the edges of his memory like a loose thread.
He stopped the car on a bluff overlooking a small, forgotten cove. The waves crashed against the jagged rocks below, a relentless rhythm that echoed the pounding in his chest. This place, this particular curve of coastline, felt… right. It felt like a place Stella would have loved. Not the grand, sun-drenched beaches of postcards, but this wilder, more untamed stretch of earth, where the wind whipped your hair and the sea roared its secrets. He’d found a faded map tucked away in the old shoebox, a crumpled memento from a life he’d tried so hard to bury. A tiny ‘X’ marked this very spot, circled in a delicate, familiar script. He got out of the car, his boots crunching on the gravel of the makeshift parking area. The air was thick with the scent of pine and decaying seaweed. He walked towards the edge of the bluff, his eyes scanning the desolate beauty of the cove. A derelict fishing boat lay half-submerged on the shingle, its wooden ribs exposed like the bones of some ancient sea creature. Further down, a cluster of weathered cottages huddled together, their windows dark and uninviting. This was it, he was sure of it. A place of forgotten dreams, a place where secrets could be whispered to the wind and carried out to sea.
