A Fragile Alliance

The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the scent of dust and decay, a fitting perfume for the remnants of their lives. Elias watched Stella from across the cavernous space, the single bare bulb overhead casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to swallow her whole. She was a silhouette, a whisper of the woman he’d once known, her shoulders hunched as if against a perpetual storm. He’d found her here, just as he’d suspected he might, drawn by the same invisible threads that had always tethered them.

“You shouldn’t have come, Stella,” he said, his voice rough, unused to the sound of her name spoken aloud. It felt like a betrayal of the years he’d spent burying it, burying her.

She turned, and the faint light caught the curve of her cheekbone, the slight tremor in her hand as she brushed a stray strand of hair from her face. Her eyes, when they met his, were pools of something unreadable – fear, certainly, but also a flicker of something else, something that made his heart ache with a forgotten tenderness. “And you shouldn’t have left, Elias,” she replied, her voice a fragile melody that cut through the silence.
