The air in the cramped attic room felt thick, cloying, as if the dust motes dancing in the single shaft of weak afternoon sun were the only inhabitants left. Elias traced the frayed edge of the photograph, the worn corners a testament to its age and the countless times it had been held. Stella. Her name, etched in his mind as surely as it was scrawled on the back of this faded image, vibrated with a melancholic hum. He’d tucked it away, a dangerous indulgence, a forbidden echo of a life he’d painstakingly buried. But the inscription, the very name ‘Stella,’ now felt like a brand, a beacon in the encroaching darkness. He’d tried to outrun it, to outrun her, but some ghosts, he was learning, were too persistent to be left behind.

He’d been so careful. Years of meticulous planning, of shedding skins and forging new identities, had brought him to this quiet, anonymous corner of the world. A life of shadows, yes, but a life where the threats were distant, theoretical. Until now. The subtle shifts, the almost imperceptible alterations in his surroundings, had begun to prickle at his carefully constructed calm. The same delivery truck passing his usual haunt twice in one day. The new face at the corner store, his eyes lingering a fraction too long. Small things, easily dismissed if one wasn’t perpetually on guard. But Elias was always on guard. And these weren’t just random occurrences; they were the tell-tale signs of a predator sniffing the air, closing in. The Shadow Broker. The unseen architect of his downfall, the relentless force that had hounded him across continents.

He had to move. The instinct, honed by years of survival, was immediate, sharp. He grabbed the worn satchel, its contents a meager collection of essentials, his eyes scanning the room for anything he might have missed, anything that could betray him. He moved with a practiced economy of motion, a ghost slipping out of a ghost’s dwelling. The street outside was a blur of indifferent faces, the hum of traffic a familiar lullaby of anonymity. He melted into the crowd, another shadow among many, his heart a drumbeat against his ribs.
