The chipped Formica tabletop felt cool beneath Elias’s forearms, a small comfort against the rising heat of his anxiety. Outside the diner, the sun was a relentless hammer, beating down on the dusty asphalt of this forgotten town. He hadn’t slept properly in days, the image of Stella’s photograph, tucked away in his wallet like a dangerous secret, burned into his mind. That smile, so full of a life he’d tried to erase, a life that now felt like it was clawing its way back. He’d thought he was safe, had built a fortress of anonymity brick by painstaking brick, but the faintest whisper, a shadow too long, a glance held a fraction too late – they were enough. They were always enough.

The waitress, a woman whose name tag read ‘Brenda,’ refilled his coffee, her movements practiced and weary. Her eyes, however, held a flicker of something that snagged Elias’s attention, a recognition that sent a jolt through him. He’d been so careful, so meticulously invisible. He met her gaze, a silent question in his own. She offered a tight, almost imperceptible nod, and then her eyes darted to the rearview mirror of a car parked across the street. A dark sedan. Not the kind that usually frequented this sleepy roadside stop. Elias’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the hum of the diner. He’d seen that car before, or one like it. They were here. The unseen force, the one that had hounded him across states and identities, had found him. The carefully constructed peace shattered, leaving him exposed and vulnerable.

He paid Brenda in cash, the bills crisp and clean, a stark contrast to the grime under his fingernails. He didn’t meet her eyes again, couldn’t risk it. As he pushed open the diner door, the glare of the sun was a physical blow. He walked with a deliberate slowness, each step a calculated move, his senses on high alert. The dark sedan remained, a silent sentinel. He didn’t run. Running was what they expected. Instead, he walked towards the old gas station at the corner, its faded sign promising ‘Premium Unleaded’ to a world that had long since moved on.
