Aria shivered, pulling her worn cardigan tighter around her shoulders. The night air, usually so crisp and clean, felt a little thin tonight, as if it, too, were holding its breath. She traced the faint constellations with her finger, the few pinpricks of light feeling like shy secrets whispered across the vast, dark canvas. It was a lonely sight, and a familiar ache settled in her chest. More stars. She wished, with all the quiet intensity of a child’s heart, for more stars.

Just as the thought solidified, a faint shimmer caught her eye, a fleeting wink of light that didn’t belong to any star she knew. It wasn’t a shooting star, streaking across the sky with fiery abandon. This was different. It was a gentle descent, a slow, almost hesitant fall, like a dandelion seed caught in a lazy breeze. It spiraled downwards, growing brighter as it neared the dewy grass at the edge of the meadow.

Curiosity, a constant companion, tugged Aria from her perch. She tiptoed across the cool earth, her bare feet sinking slightly into the soft ground. There, nestled amongst the clover and the tiny, sleeping daisies, lay a light. It pulsed with a soft, ethereal glow, a tiny beacon in the gathering darkness. It was no bigger than her thumb, and it emanated a warmth that chased away the night’s chill.

As Aria knelt, her shadow falling over the delicate light, the glow seemed to dim slightly, as if startled. She reached out a tentative finger, hovering just above the luminous surface. It felt like warm silk, smooth and impossibly soft.

“Hello?” she whispered, her voice barely a breath.

The light flickered, then coalesced, forming a shimmering, indistinct shape. It was like looking at a wisp of moonlight given form, with no sharp edges, no defined features, yet somehow conveying a sense of gentle presence. A voice, like the tinkling of tiny bells, echoed in Aria’s mind, soft and a little sad.

“Hello, little one.”

Aria gasped, her eyes wide. “You can talk? Or… think?”

“I am Lumie,” the voice chimed, a faint sadness coloring the bell-like tones. “And I have fallen.”

“Fallen?” Aria looked up at the sparse sky. “From there?”

Lumie pulsed weakly. “Yes. From my home. But my light… it fades. I am the last of my kind, you see.”

The words hung in the air, heavy with a sorrow Aria could almost taste. The last of her kind. It sounded so terribly lonely. “The last? But… where do you come from? What is your home?”

Lumie’s glow flickered again, a wave of weariness passing through her. “My home is the Star Garden. It is a place where wishes bloom, where dreams take root and unfurl into light. But… it is fading. We are fading.”

Aria frowned, her brow furrowing. “Wishes bloom? How?”

*“When wishes are made, pure and true, they send tendrils of light, like tiny roots, reaching out. These roots nourish the Star Garden, and in turn, the Garden sends
