Chapter 8
The Berry Distraction
Recalling a detail about Flicker's weakness, Luna devises a plan involving sweet berries. This clever tactic distracts the creature, giving Leo a chance to get closer.
The air in the forest was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a familiar perfume to Leo and Luna. They moved through it like shadows, their usual boisterous energy subdued by the urgency of their mission. Flicker, the tiny, shimmering creature, was a blur of iridescent wings and darting movements, the Sunstone clutched in its clawed hand. It was so close, yet so frustratingly out of reach.
Leo, with his long legs and lightning reflexes, surged forward, his eyes locked on the Sunstone. He was so focused on the chase, on the need to *catch* Flicker, that he barely noticed the subtle shifts in the wind or the way Luna kept glancing at the undergrowth. He was a sprinter, Luna was a marathon runner, and right now, their different paces were making it harder to catch their quarry.
"Almost got him!" Leo panted, his voice a little strained. He lunged, his fingers brushing against Flicker's shimmering tail, but the creature was too quick, too agile. It zipped between the gnarled roots of an ancient oak, disappearing from view for a heart-stopping moment.
