Chapter 4

The Skeptic's Shadow

Kaelen Rourke, head of Neo-Veridia's security and a staunch pragmatist, views Aris's increasingly esoteric investigation with growing suspicion. Her pursuit of ancient, unverified technologies, especially in the wake of a critical energy failure, strikes him as reckless. He fears her obsession with the past could destabilize their carefully constructed present. Kaelen confronts Aris, urging her to focus on conventional solutions and to cease her exploration of the Silent Archives, which he deems a security risk. Unbeknownst to Aris, Kaelen carries his own burden: vague, unsettling historical accounts of societal collapse that fuel his cautious nature. He secretly reviews security footage of Aris and Elara at the Archives, his pragmatic facade masking a deep-seated anxiety about the fragility of their utopian world, and a growing unease about the potential truths Aris might unearth.

Kaelen, his gaze as sharp and unblinking as the laser grid that secured the city’s core, watched the flickering display with a frown etched deep into his brow. The sudden, catastrophic failure of the primary energy conduit, the very lifeblood of their world, had sent ripples of unease through the city, but for Kaelen, it was a seismic tremor that threatened to shatter the foundations of their carefully constructed society.

His pragmatic mind, honed by years of anticipating and neutralizing threats, struggled to reconcile the elegant simplicity of the system’s design with its devastating collapse. It was like watching a perfectly crafted clock simply cease to tick, without a single gear out of place. And then there was Aris. Brilliant, undeniably brilliant, but lately, her brilliance had taken a turn towards the… esoteric. Her obsession with the Silent Archives, a repository of what he considered fanciful myths and unsubstantiated whispers from a forgotten age, was becoming a dangerous distraction.

The chime of his private comms unit broke his concentration. “Rourke,” he answered, his voice a low, even baritone.
