Agent Thorne stared at the flickering digits on the secure terminal, the low hum of the server room a stark contrast to the tempest brewing within him. The encrypted data packet, pulled from the shattered remnants of a compromised satellite uplink, was supposed to be another piece of Julliana Dilige’s grand, terrifying puzzle. Instead, it was a shard of glass aimed directly at his own heart.
“Anything, Thorne?” Stevie’s voice, sharp and focused, crackled through his earpiece. She was deep in the labyrinthine digital sewers of Dilige’s network, a phantom weaving through firewalls and ghosting past surveillance.
Thorne swallowed, the dry air suddenly thick with unspoken dread. “Almost… there’s something here, Stevie. Something… unexpected.” He zoomed in on a fragmented log file, a digital ghost whispering from a forgotten time. A name. A date. A location. All irrevocably linked to a mission he’d tried to bury, a failure that had gnawed at him for years.
