The chill of the late autumn evening seeped through the thin fabric of Arthur’s waistcoat, a stark contrast to the warmth that had begun to bloom within him. It was a warmth born not of comfort, but of a burgeoning, insistent flame of purpose. He stood on the cobblestone street outside ‘The Gilded Spoon,’ the gaslights casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters. The cryptic note, now tucked securely inside his own coat, felt heavier than any tray he had ever carried. It was a weight of knowledge, a burden of unanswered questions that had begun to gnaw at his insides, far more potent than hunger.

He had spent the better part of the day replaying the encounter with Silas Croft. The old man’s gnarled hands, trembling as he clutched his teacup, the way his rheumy eyes darted nervously towards the street, the barely perceptible tremor in his voice when he spoke of “old debts” and “things best left buried.” Croft hadn’t been able to offer a direct answer, not really, but he had painted a picture with his fragmented pronouncements, a tapestry of hushed rumors and veiled threats that seemed to weave themselves around the words on the note. A forgotten scandal. A powerful woman. A man wronged.

Arthur’s mind, usually so adept at remembering orders and anticipating patrons’ needs, was now a whirlwind of possibilities. He traced the elegant, looping script of the note with his finger, the ink still surprisingly dark, as if written only yesterday. “The Nightingale sings at midnight, but the cage is gilded. Seek the truth where the water weeps. Beware the serpent’s hiss.” The words themselves were a puzzle, each phrase a locked door. He had always possessed a knack for these things, a quiet fascination with crosswords and ciphers that he’d kept to himself, a small, private amusement. Now, that hidden talent felt like a beacon in the fog.
