Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Elara wakes with the ticking watch and writes a new poem about twelve marksmen and spinning time. She visits the Old Oak, where she recites the poem and meets Thaddeus again. Together they discuss the nature of steady hands and the courage to fire. Elara realizes that time's permission is not about waiting but about choosing the moment. She returns home to find the sapling has grown a silver leaf, and the feather now glows with a steady light.
Elara woke to the sound of ticking. Not the frantic scramble of an alarm clock, but a calm, measured pulse that seemed to come from inside her chest. She opened her eyes. The watch was still in her hand, its hands of light now steady, pointing to a number that wasn't there. The feather lay beside her on the pillow, humming softly, as if it had been dreaming too.
She sat up, stretching. The sapling in the corner had grown another leaf overnight—this one silver, catching the morning light like a mirror. She touched it, and it chimed, a single clear note that hung in the air for a moment before fading.
“Good morning,” she said, not sure if she was talking to the plant, the watch, or herself.
