Chapter 8
The Pact's Price
Further journal entries reveal the pact's true cost: a cyclical sacrifice. Sarah realizes the curse demands a life, and the current disappearances are terrifyingly consistent with the ancient ritual.
The brittle pages of Great Aunt Clara’s journal felt like dried leaves beneath Sarah’s trembling fingers. Each entry was a whisper from a past she was only just beginning to understand, a past steeped in shadow and a chilling pact. Chapter seven had ended with the unnerving realization that the disappearances in town weren't random acts of violence. They were a terrifyingly consistent echo of something ancient, something Clara had desperately tried to document. Now, Sarah was about to uncover the true, horrific price of that pact.
She turned a page, the paper crackling like a dry twig. The ink, faded but still legible, spoke of a bargain struck in desperation, a desperate plea to the unseen forces that governed their lineage. “The blood must flow, the debt must be paid, lest the barren earth claim us all.” Sarah’s breath hitched. Barren earth? It sounded like a plague, a blight that threatened to consume their family, their very existence, if the pact wasn't honored.
Clara’s handwriting grew more frantic as she detailed the specifics of the ‘payment.’ It wasn’t a simple offering of gratitude or a symbolic gesture. It was a life. A life given willingly, or perhaps, less so, to appease whatever ancient entity had been invoked. The journal spoke of generations where a chosen member, often one on the cusp of adulthood, would simply vanish. No struggle, no trace, just… gone. A silent void left in their wake.
