Chapter 4
Echoes of the Womb
Sarah delves deeper into the journal, uncovering cryptic entries about the 'womb's whisper.' She suspects the curse isn't supernatural but a calculated human ploy, possibly a generations-old vendetta.
The musty scent of aged paper and forgotten ink filled Sarah’s small apartment, a stark contrast to the sterile efficiency of Detective Miller’s office. She traced the faded script in Great Aunt Clara’s journal, the words blurring and reforming under the lamplight as if alive. The entries were becoming more fragmented, more desperate, as she neared the end of the brittle pages. Clara’s elegant cursive, once a comfort, now felt like a frantic hand reaching out from the abyss.
"The womb’s whisper… it’s not a curse, not truly," Sarah read aloud, her voice barely a murmur. "It’s a promise. A debt. Paid in the silence of the lineage." She shivered, the words settling like cold dust on her skin. The idea that this "curse," this string of misfortunes and untimely deaths that had plagued her family for generations, was not some ethereal punishment but a deliberate act, a calculated maneuver, sent a fresh wave of unease through her. It was a thought she’d been circling, a dark bloom in the garden of her fear, and now Clara’s words seemed to confirm it.
She flipped through more pages, her fingers brushing against a dried, brittle flower pressed between two leaves. A forget-me-not, perhaps? A poignant, almost mocking, gesture from a woman who seemed to have foreseen her own fate, and that of those who would follow. "They think it’s the mothers," another passage read, "but it’s the blood. The blood remembers. And it demands its due."
