The air in the small, sterile room crackled with an unspoken tension, thick and suffocating. Shane sat across from Detective Miller, his own reflection a distorted stranger in the polished table. The detective’s gaze was steady, unblinking, a silent weight that pressed down on Shane. The DNA swab sat on a small tray between them, a minuscule vial holding the potential to unravel a life he thought he understood.
“We just need a sample, Shane,” Miller’s voice was low, devoid of emotion, yet carrying an undertone of urgency that pricked at Shane’s unease. “It’s standard procedure in cases like this.”
Standard procedure. The words felt hollow. Nothing about this was standard. Phillip, the brother who had once been a source of family pride, a decorated Marine, was now a name whispered in hushed tones, a shadow that stretched across their lives. And now, the shadow was reaching for Shane, demanding a piece of him to prove what? That he was different? That he wasn't tainted by the same blood?
