Beside him, a younger officer, fresh-faced but with a hard glint in his eyes, meticulously documented the exchange. Shane, the unexpected hero, sat across from them, the weight of his family’s shame pressing down on him, a physical ache in his chest. The DNA swab, a tiny, innocuous piece of plastic, had been the key that unlocked a Pandora’s Box of horrors.
“We just need you to confirm a few things, Shane,” Miller’s voice was low, steady, devoid of judgment but heavy with the gravity of their conversation. “About Phillip. About his movements. Anything you saw, anything you heard, no matter how small it seems.”
Shane swallowed, his throat dry. He’d been cooperative, of course. He’d given the swab without hesitation, a stark contrast to Phillip’s initial defiance and the subsequent, agonizing wait for results. But now, trapped in this room, the full extent of what that swab represented began to truly sink in. Phillip, the decorated Marine, the pride of their parents, the brother who had always been a little too intense, a little too detached… was a monster. And Shane was the one who had helped confirm it.
