The silence in the car was thick, a palpable entity that pressed in on Shane from all sides. He gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white, his gaze fixed on the receding headlights of his sister’s car. Behind him, his parents sat in the back, their faces etched with a weariness that went bone-deep. They had left the courthouse, the air still heavy with the echoes of testimony that painted a picture so horrific, so utterly alien, that it felt like a nightmare they couldn't wake from. Shane glanced in the rearview mirror, catching his mother’s vacant stare. Her eyes, once so full of pride, now held a landscape of unimaginable pain.

“We’ll be alright,” he said, his voice a rough whisper, more for himself than for them. “We’ll get through this. We always do.”

His father, a man of quiet strength, placed a hand on Shane’s shoulder. “You’re right, son. We’re a family. We’re each other’s rock.”
