The quiet hum of the refrigerator was the loudest sound in the house. Shane sat at the kitchen table, the same oak table where family dinners had once echoed with laughter and boisterous stories. Now, silence pressed down, heavy and suffocating. He traced the grain of the wood with a fingertip, each swirl and knot a memory he couldn’t quite grasp, or perhaps, one he desperately wished he could forget. The air felt thick, stagnant, as if the very molecules had absorbed the unspoken horror that had fractured their lives.

His father, a man whose hands had always been calloused from honest work and whose eyes had held a steady kindness, sat across from him. His gaze was fixed somewhere beyond the chipped ceramic mug of lukewarm coffee, lost in a landscape of disbelief and profound sorrow. The news had landed like a bomb, detonating not just their immediate present, but the very foundation of their past. Phillip. The name itself felt like a foreign object, a sharp shard of glass lodged in the heart of their family.

Shane remembered Phillip as a whirlwind of restless energy, a shadow that flickered at the edges of childhood memories. He’d been louder, bolder, and always seemed to be chasing something just out of reach. There had been whispers, of course, hushed conversations between his parents, worried glances exchanged over his mother’s knitting. But they had always been dismissed, explained away as youthful indiscretion, a rough patch. Never this. Never the monstrous truth that DNA had so cruelly and irrevocably unveiled.
