The rain lashed against the grimy window of the Mount Airy boarding house, each drop a tiny hammer against the glass. Sarah, her shoulders slumped with weariness, watched the water streak down the pane. Rent was due, and her meager earnings as a waitress barely covered the bills. When the truck driver, a man named Phillip with a disarmingly earnest smile and tales of lonely highways, had asked about a room, she’d felt a flicker of relief. He seemed quiet, polite, and paid in cash, always on time. A godsend, she’d thought, a temporary reprieve from the constant gnawing anxiety of poverty.

He’d been a tenant for a few months, a presence that barely registered. He kept to himself, his days spent on the road, his nights quiet and unobtrusive. Sarah, focused on surviving, hadn't paid much attention to the nuances of his presence. He was just a tenant, a source of much-needed income. There were times, she now recalled with a shiver, when his gaze lingered a moment too long, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes that she’d dismissed as the weariness of a long haul. Sarah, a practical woman, had dismissed them as coincidence, the tragic but common occurrences of a world that wasn't always kind. But a seed of unease had been planted. One evening, after a particularly unsettling news report about a disappearance in a town where Phillip had recently been, Sarah had felt a prickle of fear. She’d decided, with a heavy heart, that it was time for Phillip to find another room. She’d approached him cautiously, her voice trembling slightly as she explained that she needed the room back.
