The air in the small, cramped room felt heavy, thick with the unspoken questions that had hung between them for years. The sterile scent of disinfectant did little to mask the underlying tension, a palpable thing that coiled in the pit of Mark’s stomach. He watched his mother, her face a roadmap of worry and a deep, weary sadness, as she clutched a worn tissue. His father sat beside her, his usual solid presence seeming to shrink, his gaze fixed on the chipped linoleum floor.

“Ohio,” his mother whispered, her voice raspy. “That’s all they could tell us. Ohio.” She shook her head, a gesture of profound helplessness. “And that her records… they just disappeared. A fire.”

Mark felt a familiar frustration prickle at him, a sensation he’d learned to suppress over the years. It was a futile emotion, like trying to grasp smoke. They had delved into the fragmented history of ‘David’s’ mother, their wife and daughter-in-law, for years, searching for answers, for a root cause, for anything that might explain the darkness that had consumed their son. But the trail always led to a dead end, a void. The adoption records, supposedly lost in a bureaucratic blaze, were the ultimate barrier.
