The question hung heavy in the air, a phantom limb of inquiry that Mark sometimes felt twitching in his own mind. What sort of family had birthed such darkness? It was a question that gnawed at him, especially when he considered his mother, a woman whose own origins were shrouded in a peculiar kind of mystery. Her adoption records, the very proof of her beginnings, had been consumed by a fire in the county records department, a blaze that felt less like an accident and more like a deliberate erasure. He’d always sensed a subtle melancholy in her, a quiet searching that he’d attributed to the natural curiosities of an adopted child. But now, with the chilling reality of his half-brother’s psychopathy, he couldn’t help but wonder if that fire had been the first flicker of a darkness that had, in turn, spawned its own inferno in David.

He watched his mother across the sparse dining room table, the afternoon sun casting long shadows that seemed to lengthen her already weary face. She was meticulously folding napkins, a nervous habit she’d developed in recent months, her movements precise, almost frantic. He knew she was thinking about David, just as he was. "Did you... did you ever wonder, Mom," Mark began, his voice low, hesitant, "about your own family? Before you were adopted?"
