The sterile white walls of the interrogation room seemed to absorb every sound, every tremor of fear, every flicker of evasion. Detective Miller leaned forward, his gaze unwavering, a silent predator himself, patiently waiting for his prey to reveal its true nature. He’d seen it all, or so he’d thought. He’d stared into the eyes of monsters before, but there was something about this one, this “David,” that felt… different. Colder. More calculating.
“Your family believes you, David,” Miller said, his voice low and steady, a stark contrast to the storm raging within the suspect. “They’ve always believed in you. But the evidence… the DNA… it doesn’t lie.”
David’s lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. It didn't reach his eyes, which remained unsettlingly calm, like a placid lake reflecting a sky devoid of stars. “Evidence can be misinterpreted, Detective,” he said, his voice smooth, almost musical. “People make mistakes. Even science.”
