The insistent rapping on the door was a jarring intrusion into the fragile quietude of Mark’s life. It had been weeks since the nightmare had fully descended, since the DNA results had irrevocably cemented David’s monstrous identity, and the weight of it all still pressed down, a suffocating blanket. He’d retreated, as had his parents, into a self-imposed exile within the familiar walls of their childhood home, a sanctuary now tainted by the ghost of unspeakable acts.

He hesitated, his hand hovering over the doorknob. Who could it be? The media had mostly dispersed, their initial frenzy satisfied by the court’s pronouncements. Neighbors, once a source of uncomfortable pity, had largely retreated into their own lives, their fear of contamination outweighing their curiosity. This knock felt different, more official, more urgent.

Taking a deep breath, Mark opened the door. Standing on the porch, silhouetted against the pale afternoon sun, were two figures. One was a man in a crisp, dark suit, his face impassive, professional. The other, a woman, her expression a mixture of sternness and something akin to weary sympathy, wore a uniform Mark recognized with a jolt. Detective Miller.
