The air in the trailer had taken on a new thickness, a palpable weight that settled in my lungs and clung to my skin. It was more than just the stale scent of cheap beer and desperation anymore; it was the odor of something ancient and rotten, something that had burrowed deep into the very foundations of this flimsy structure. And then, there it was. Perched on the highest point of the sagging roof, a silhouette against the bruised twilight sky – the eagle.

It was immense, larger than any bird I’d ever seen outside of a nature documentary. Its feathers were the color of a storm cloud, its head a stark, blinding white. It sat there, utterly motionless, its gaze fixed, I felt, directly upon me. It hadn’t been there before. I was sure of it. The faces, the creeping dread, that had all been confined to the periphery, to the windows and the edges of my vision. But this… this was an undeniable, solid presence. A sentinel.

I tried to shake it off, to dismiss it as a trick of the light, a figment conjured by my frayed nerves. But the longer I stared, the more real it became. Its stillness was profound, a stark contrast to the frantic thrumming in my own chest. It was as if the world outside had paused, holding its breath, waiting for my next move. And I, trapped in this metal box of my own making, could only watch it watch me.
