The trailer, once a sanctuary, now felt like a cage with walls that breathed. I’d pace its narrow confines, the linoleum cool beneath my bare feet, a stark contrast to the heat that seemed to emanate from my own skin. It was in those quiet hours, when the world outside was hushed and the only sounds were the creaks of the trailer settling and the frantic thumping of my own heart, that I began to truly explore this new landscape within me. The faces, the ones that had clawed their way into my reality from beyond the glass, they hadn’t left. They’d simply retreated, their grotesque visages now etched onto the inside of my eyelids, a permanent gallery of my deepest fears. But fear was no longer the dominant emotion. It had been supplanted by something far more potent, far more intoxicating: a burgeoning sense of power.

I remembered the first time I consciously tried it. It was after a particularly vivid dream, one where I’d found myself back in that humid, suffocating night, the faces pressing closer, their breath like graveyard dirt on my skin. But this time, I wasn't paralyzed. I was… aware. I felt a surge, a raw, untamed energy thrumming through my veins. I focused on the figure that had been the most prominent, the one with the stretched, leathery skin and eyes like burnt-out coals. I pictured it, in excruciating detail, and willed it to feel my presence, my rage. I imagined wrapping tendrils of my own darkness around its spectral form, squeezing, suffocating.

The next morning, I woke with a hollow ache in my chest, but also with a strange sense of accomplishment. Later that day, I ran into Brenda from the gas station. Brenda, who always had a saccharine smile and a way of talking down to me, even though we were the same age. She was complaining about a headache, a throbbing, insistent pain behind her eyes. And then she said it, her voice wavering, "It feels like… like something's trying to get out of my head, you know? Like a… a bad dream that won't stop." A shiver, not of fear but of exhilaration, traced its way down my spine. It was a small thing, a coincidence maybe, but it was enough. It was the seed.
