The Veil Thins
The barrier between worlds feels permeable to the narrator. They believe they can bridge the gap, drawing more of the supernatural into their reality and their control.
The air in the trailer had a new kind of hum to it, a low thrum that vibrated not just in my ears, but in my bones. It was like the world had tuned itself to a frequency only I could hear, a secret broadcast from beyond the thin, cracked walls of this place. The faces, the ones that had clawed their way into my sleep and then, impossibly, into my waking hours, they felt closer now. Not just outside the smudged glass, but *in* here, in the stale air, in the shadows that clung to the corners like old cobwebs.
I’d been pacing for hours, the worn linoleum cool beneath my bare feet. Each step was a question, each creak of the floorboards an answer I didn't want to hear. The windows, once just panes of glass separating me from the indifferent night, now felt like portals, shimmering and unstable. I could almost see through them, not to the familiar scrub brush and dirt, but to… somewhere else. A place of shifting colors and whispers that tickled the edges of my hearing.
It wasn't just a feeling anymore. It was a certainty, a cold, hard knot in my gut. The veil, as I’d started calling it in my head, was thinning. It was fraying at the edges, and I was the one pulling the threads. The terror that had once consumed me was still there, a phantom ache, but it was being overlaid by something else, something far more potent. A sense of power.
