Old Man Hemlock sat by the dying embers of his hearth, the silence of his small cottage a stark contrast to the hushed anxieties that had settled over the village like a shroud. The flickering firelight cast long, dancing shadows on the rough-hewn walls, shadows that seemed to writhe with unspoken fears. He, more than most, understood fear. They didn't see the gnawing doubt, the buried memories that clawed at him in the dead of night.
