A Healer's Despair

Mara knelt by the bedside of young Anya, her brow furrowed with a worry that had become as familiar as the scent of dried herbs clinging to her worn tunic. Anya’s breathing was shallow, her skin clammy and pale, a mirror of the other villagers who had fallen prey to this strange, debilitating sickness. For weeks, Mara had waged a tireless war against this unseen enemy, her small cottage overflowing with the fragrant steam of poultices and the bitter aroma of tinctures. Yet, each remedy, every carefully brewed potion, proved as futile as trying to catch moonlight in a sieve.

She gently pressed a cool cloth to Anya’s forehead, the child’s eyes fluttering open for a fleeting moment, vacant and clouded. A sigh escaped Mara’s lips, heavy with the weight of her failure. “Sleep now, little one,” she murmured, her voice raspy from days of little rest and much whispered encouragement. Anya’s eyelids drooped shut again, the child’s small hand listlessly falling back onto the thin blanket.

Mara stood, her joints aching with a fatigue that went deeper than mere physical exertion. It was the weariness of a healer whose skills had been rendered useless, whose knowledge, painstakingly gathered over years of apprenticeship and intuition, was proving woefully inadequate. She walked to the window, gazing out at the hushed village. The usual cheerful chatter and the comforting rhythm of daily life had been replaced by an unnerving quiet, punctuated only by the mournful cry of a distant crow or the anxious murmur of worried families. Fear, a cold and insidious vine, was slowly strangling the heart of their community.
