Chapter 5
The Broken Vow
The journal reveals the tale of a solemn vow made and subsequently broken by the village ancestors. This transgression, long buried, is now manifesting as the mysterious illness plaguing their present.
The air in Elara’s small cottage, usually thick with the scent of dried herbs and ancient paper, now held a different, more unsettling perfume – the faint, cloying sweetness of decay. Liam moved through the familiar space with a reverence that bordered on dread. Sunlight, usually so cheerful as it streamed through the dusty windowpanes, seemed muted, as if the very light itself was hesitant to intrude. He clutched the leather-bound journal, its pages brittle and worn, like a lifeline in a sea of confusion. Elara’s hand, so steady when weaving tales, had scrawled these words in a desperate, hurried script, a stark contrast to her usual elegant calligraphy.
He settled onto the worn rug by the hearth, the embers glowing faintly like watchful eyes. The journal lay open, its pages filled with Elara’s familiar, looping script, but the words themselves spoke of a darkness Liam had never associated with his beloved mentor. He traced a passage, his brow furrowed. It spoke of a time before the village, a time when the land was wild and untamed, and the people were few.
*“They gathered under the boughs of the Whispering Oak,”* the entry read, *“the first families of this valley. Their hearts were one, their needs were simple, and their gratitude to the spirits of the land was boundless. They swore a vow, a promise etched not in ink, but in the very marrow of their bones, to always honor the balance, to never take more than they needed, and to always return what they borrowed from the earth. This was the Covenant of the First Dawn.”*
