The air in Elara’s storytelling circle, usually alive with the murmur of anticipation and the crackle of hearth fire, hung heavy and still. Liam traced the worn symbols in Elara’s journal, each stroke of her elegant, spidery script a whisper from a forgotten time. The pages, brittle with age, spoke of a deep wound in the village’s heart, a promise shattered generations ago, a debt left unpaid. And now, the sickness, a phantom mirroring Elara’s own fading light, was the echo of that ancient transgression.
He looked up, his gaze sweeping across the hushed faces of the village council. Old Man Hemlock sat stoically, his weathered face a mask of practiced indifference, though Liam saw the flicker of unease in the tight set of his jaw. Mara, her eyes etched with a weariness that went beyond sleepless nights, clutched a bundle of dried herbs as if they were a shield against the encroaching darkness. Others, their faces etched with fear, sat in anxious silence, their usual boisterous camaraderie replaced by a palpable dread.
“The journal,” Liam began, his voice a little shaky, “it speaks of a ritual. A mending.” He held up the leather-bound book, its pages filled with Elara’s familiar wisdom, now tinged with a desperate urgency. “A ritual to honor the promise, to heal the rift that has festered for so long.”
