The air in the village square, usually alive with the comforting hum of communal life, was thick with a different sort of energy. It was a palpable tension, a quiet dread that had settled over them like a shroud since Elara, their beloved elder, had been found slumped in her storytelling chair, her vibrant voice inexplicably silenced. Now, as Liam stood before them, his young face earnest and etched with a seriousness that belied his years, that dread began to shift, to coalesce into something more defined: doubt.

He had spoken of Elara’s journal, of the faded ink and the strange symbols, of the story it told – a story of a promise broken, of a debt unpaid, a tale woven into the very fabric of their village’s history. His voice, though trembling at times, had carried the weight of Elara’s words, the urgency of her final, unspoken plea. He saw the faces before him, a sea of troubled eyes. Old Man Hemlock stood near the front, his arms crossed, his brow furrowed, a familiar mask of skepticism firmly in place. Yet, even his gaze seemed less dismissive, more watchful, as if a tiny seed of unease had taken root within his pragmatic heart.

“You speak of ancient things, boy,” Hemlock’s voice rumbled, a low growl that usually commanded attention. “Promises made by those long gone. How can that explain the sickness that now grips our families?”
