Chapter 12
Rivalry Reaches Peak Absurdity: The Great Capture-Off
The escalating chaos forces Drucilla and Brenda into an unofficial 'capture-off.' Drucilla attempts to herd hamsters using a leaf blower (on its lowest setting, of course), while Brenda tries to create a 'hamster vortex' with a series of strategically placed fans. Their increasingly ridiculous tactics, aimed at one-upping each other, inadvertently begin to funnel the hamsters towards a central, unexpected location – the cul-de-sac at the end of the street.
The air thrummed with a frantic energy, a symphony of tiny paws scrabbling, miniature squeaks of triumph, and the occasional, bewildered yelp from a neighborhood dog momentarily caught in the furry crossfire. Drucilla, perched precariously on the sturdy arm of her father’s garden gnome (recently christened “General Patton” in her mind), surveyed the scene with the grim determination of a general facing an insurmountable horde. Report!”
From behind a particularly robust rhododendron bush, Sonya’s head popped up, a smudge of dirt adorning her cheek and a triumphant glint in her eye. She was cradling a surprisingly calm hamster, which was currently attempting to gnaw a hole through her shirt pocket. “They like the clover, Drucilla! And I think Bartholomew is learning to fetch my hair tie!”
