She’d dismissed Elara’s initial pronouncements as the ramblings of an overzealous apprentice, fueled by too many late nights staring into the void. Elara, with her wide, earnest eyes and perpetually ink-stained fingers, was a bright spark, certainly, but her theories about ley lines fluctuating like a startled bird’s heartbeat and stardust behaving like a rogue tide? Magic, especially magic that defied the elegant mathematics of the universe, was a messy variable she preferred to keep at arm’s length.
