Elara traced the swirling nebulae on her worn star chart, the faint scent of dried ink and parchment a familiar comfort in the quiet of the observatory. Outside, the night sky pulsed with an unnatural vibrancy, the Stardust Bloom painting the heavens in hues of amethyst and molten gold. It was a spectacle that drew gasps from even the most seasoned astronomers, a celestial artist gone wild, splashing cosmic paint across the velvet canvas of night. But for Elara, the beauty was laced with a prickle of unease. The very air seemed to hum, a low thrumming that vibrated in her bones, a sensation she’d felt growing stronger with each passing night.

Lyra, of course, was in her element. Elara could hear the faint echo of her voice, clear and confident, from the main observation deck, no doubt explaining the Bloom’s unprecedented intensity to a rapt audience. Elara imagined Lyra’s dark hair swept up, a few stray strands escaping to frame her sharp, intelligent features, her eyes, the colour of a summer twilight, alight with the thrill of discovery. A familiar ache tightened in Elara’s chest, a silent yearning that was as constant as the pull of the moon. She contented herself with the solitude of her small alcove, her personal sanctuary filled with stacks of ancient texts and the comforting glow of her enchanted astrolabe.

The ley lines, those invisible rivers of magic that flowed through their world, were more agitated than anyone had ever recorded. Elara had been charting the subtle shifts, the tremors that rippled through the fabric of reality, and her findings were alarming. The Bloom, while breathtaking, seemed to be directly exacerbating the instability, feeding the growing chaos. She’d tried to voice her concerns to Lyra a few days ago, her voice a hesitant whisper against the vastness of Lyra’s reputation. Lyra, ever the pragmatist, had listened with a polite, almost dismissive air, her focus fixed on the purely astronomical aspects of the Bloom. "Fascinating spectral analysis, Elara," she’d said, her tone kind but distant, "but the ley lines are a matter for the mages, not astronomers." The words still stung, a gentle reminder of the gulf between them.
