Chapter 7
A Tumble and a Treasure
While pursuing a lead, Isolde trips and falls, accidentally discovering a hidden, dusty compartment beneath a loose floorboard.
The air in the Queen’s private study was thick with despair, a cloying perfume of wilting roses and crushed hopes. Queen Aurelia, usually a vibrant splash of crimson velvet and regal pronouncements, was draped across her chaise lounge like a vanquished banner, her face buried in a lace-trimmed handkerchief. “It’s gone, Isolde,” she sobbed, her voice muffled. “My masterpiece. The court, a fickle beast at the best of times, had predictably erupted into a cacophony of speculation – curses, dark magic, even divine displeasure.
“Your Majesty,” I began, my voice a little too high, betraying my own nerves. “We cannot succumb to despair. There must be an explanation. The Bloom was… special. It requires special care, perhaps?” I was grasping at straws, my mind a jumble of half-remembered gardening tips and the Queen’s dramatic pronouncements about the ‘unique atmospheric requirements’ of her prize.
