The air in the Queen’s chambers was thick with the scent of lavender and despair. Queen Aurelia, usually a vision of regal composure, was slumped on her chaise lounge, a silken handkerchief dabbing at eyes that threatened to overflow. The silken threads of her gown seemed to mirror the tangled mess of my own thoughts. The bloom, my Queen’s magnificent, supposedly magical bloom, was dead. Deader than a doornail, deader than a forgotten dream, deader than… well, I stopped myself before I could compare it to the Queen’s hopes.

“Isolde,” her voice was a fragile whisper, barely disturbing the heavy velvet curtains. “What am I to do? My reputation… the kingdom… it’s all gone. A curse, surely. A wicked curse upon this garden.”

I smoothed my own simple linen gown, feeling utterly inadequate. My usual role involved fetching embroidery silks, ensuring her tea was the perfect temperature, and occasionally tripping over a misplaced footstool. Now, I was tasked with unearthing the truth behind a wilting wonder, a task that felt as improbable as teaching a griffin to knit.
