Chapter 20
A Blooming Reputation
The Queen's garden is revitalized, her reputation secured. Isolde, the clumsy lady-in-waiting, is celebrated for her sharp wit and unexpected detective skills.
The air in the Queen's private gardens hummed with a nervous energy, a stark contrast to the usual serene tranquility that permeated the manicured hedges and artfully sculpted rose bushes. Sunlight dappled through the leaves, painting shifting patterns on the flagstone paths, but it did little to dispel the lingering pall of disaster. The magnificent Bloom, the jewel of Queen Aurelia’s collection, the very flower that had been poised to cement her legacy as the kingdom’s foremost horticulturalist, lay in a crumpled, pathetic heap, its vibrant petals now dull and lifeless. The whispers, which had begun as a murmur of shock during the unveiling, had now swelled into a chorus of concern, bordering on outright panic. And I, Lady Isolde, Queen Aurelia’s loyal, if perpetually flustered, lady-in-waiting, was tasked with stemming the tide of despair before it swept away the very foundations of our kingdom’s composure.
My initial foray into the garden, after the Queen’s dramatic pronouncements of despair and subsequent retreat to her chambers, had been a clumsy dance of avoidance and accidental discovery. I’d nearly tripped over a gnome, sent a fountain’s spray into the face of a bewildered courtier, and managed to get tangled in a particularly aggressive vine, all in my frantic attempt to appear purposeful while my mind raced. The Queen, bless her dramatic heart, had been inconsolable, her usual regal bearing replaced by a crumpled heap of silk and sorrow. “My Bloom! My life’s work! Ruined!” she’d wailed, her voice cracking. It was my duty, my sworn loyalty, to find out *why*.
The royal gardeners, usually a stoic and efficient lot, were a picture of bewildered grief. They wrung their hands, their faces etched with a mixture of confusion and fear. “Never seen anything like it, my Lady,” muttered old Master Thorne, his usually rosy cheeks pale. “It was… vigorous. Healthy as can be just yesterday. And then… this.” He gestured with a trembling hand towards the wilting spectacle. “As if a shadow fell upon it.”
