The Queen's Forgiveness
Isolde presents the truth to Queen Aurelia. The Queen, though initially angry, is relieved it wasn't a curse and perhaps even amused by the prank.
The Queen’s chamber was hushed, save for the frantic rustle of my own skirts as I smoothed them for the tenth time. My heart hammered a rhythm against my ribs that felt entirely too loud for the solemnity of the occasion. Before me, Queen Aurelia sat, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her usually vibrant face pale and drawn. The grand unveiling, the triumph she had so eagerly anticipated, had dissolved into a spectacle of wilting petals and whispered accusations. And now, the weight of proving it wasn’t a curse, of clearing the royal name, rested squarely upon my decidedly unglamorous shoulders.
“Your Majesty,” I began, my voice trembling slightly, “I believe I have found… an answer.”
She looked up, her eyes, usually sharp and commanding, were clouded with a profound sadness. “An answer, Isolde? Or merely another fanciful tale from the lips of a clumsy lady-in-waiting?” Her tone was weary, devoid of its usual regal fire. The wilted bloom, a tragic, shriveled husk of its former glory, sat in a silver urn on a nearby pedestal, a constant, mocking reminder of her dashed hopes.
