The air in the Queen’s private conservatory hung thick with the scent of desperation, a cloying perfume of wilting petals and the faint, metallic tang of my own anxiety. Sunlight, usually so benevolent in this hallowed space, seemed to mock us, illuminating the tragic tableau of my Queen’s ruined masterpiece. Queen Aurelia, her face a mask of crumbling dignity, sat slumped on a velvet-cushioned bench, her once-proud posture reduced to a defeated slump. Her gaze, usually so bright with horticultural passion, was fixed on the withered husk of what had been the most magnificent bloom the kingdom had ever seen, a testament to her supposed genius.

“It’s no use, Isolde,” she whispered, her voice brittle as dried leaves. “My reign as Queen of Blooms is over. Reduced to dust and… and embarrassment.” A single tear traced a path down her cheek, a devastating sight for one who usually commanded her emotions with the same iron will she applied to her topiary.

I knelt beside her, my heart aching with a loyalty that felt as heavy as a sack of potting soil. My own hands, usually a source of minor chaos in the royal court, were now my only hope. Barty Buttercup’s diary lay open on a nearby table, its brittle pages filled with the bitter scrawl of a man scorned. Beside it, a small, intricately carved wooden box, the one Elara Meadowlight had reluctantly surrendered, sat innocently, its contents a chilling indictment of her jealousy.
