Restoring the Bloom's Magic
With Elara's confession, Isolde must now find a way to procure the moonpetal and counteract Elara's agent to save the Queen's garden.
The hushed silence that followed Elara’s confession in the conservatory was thicker than any fog I’d ever encountered. It pressed in on me, heavy with the scent of damp earth and the lingering, sickly-sweet perfume of the Queen’s ruined bloom. Elara, her face a mask of carefully constructed remorse, looked less like a repentant thief and more like a child caught with her hand in the cookie jar, albeit a jar filled with poison. My own hands, stained with the tell-tale residue of Elara’s wilting agent, felt clammy.
“So,” I began, my voice a little too high, a little too shaky, “you admit it. The moonpetal… you knew it was missing. You orchestrated this.”
Elara gave a small, almost imperceptible nod, her eyes darting towards the wilting petals of the Queen’s prize. “It was… a childish thing, Lady Isolde. A moment of… competitive fervor. I never intended for it to be so final.” Her voice was a silken whisper, laced with a performative sorrow that made my teeth ache. She was good, I’ll give her that. So good, in fact, that for a fleeting second, I almost believed her.
