Isolde confronts Elara, presenting the evidence. Elara, cornered, confesses her jealousy and desire to outshine the Queen.
The air in Elara Meadowlight’s private conservatory hung thick and cloying, heavy with the scent of exotic blooms and something else… something sharp and metallic, like the tang of a storm brewing. Sunlight, filtered through panes of glass, dappled the lush, verdant chaos, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stillness. I clutched the worn leather-bound diary to my chest, its pages a testament to years of simmering resentment, and took a deep breath, trying to steady the tremor in my hands. This was it. The culmination of my frantic searches, my clumsy interrogations, my near-death experience with a particularly aggressive Venus flytrap.
Elara, perched on a wrought-iron stool amidst a riot of orchids, looked up from her meticulous pruning. Her smile, usually as bright and welcoming as a sun-drenched meadow, seemed to falter, a subtle tightening around her eyes. “Lady Isolde. To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure? Have you come to admire my… specimens?” Her voice was smooth, practiced, the kind that could lull a viper to sleep.
“I’ve come for answers, Elara,” I said, my voice firmer than I expected. I stepped further into the humid space, the door clicking shut behind me with a decisive sound. The shadows seemed to lengthen, swallowing the cheerful light. “Answers about the Queen’s bloom. About why it died.”
